We give you different controls for keeping a recoverable copy and taking records out of the app. Foleil's encrypted backup copy can travel with an iPhone backup under its key requirements. A JSON or CSV export is a separate file workflow that you prepare, review and send to a destination you choose.

The advantage is knowing which copy you are making. Encryption of the backup does not mean an exported CSV is encrypted. Turning a local backup preference off does not reach into an older computer backup or a file you already shared. Those limits are part of useful control.

How it works

Use Backup and restore to manage the encrypted copy and inspect its saved status; restoration needs the matching key, with iCloud Keychain involved in the supported iCloud restore route. Progress photos enter the backup only when you choose to include them. Export data separately prepares your Foleil records as JSON and CSV with selected file content, then opens sharing only when you choose where to send it.

Why it matters

A backup and an export solve different problems. One supports recovery under defined conditions; the other gives you portable files that a destination can read. Calling both secure without explaining their differences would make it harder to choose appropriately.

Apple's secure keychain-syncing guide, accessed 19 October 2026, describes the protection of synchronised keychain items. It provides platform context, not a guarantee of recoverability for every Foleil installation. Keep the backup status, key availability and older copies in mind rather than assuming that a switch alone proves a complete recoverable backup exists.

Compared with other health and fitness tools

Apple Health's sharing and export guide, accessed 19 October 2026, documents exporting Health data. Foleil's export serves a different record set: the local information you keep in Foleil, rather than a full export of Apple Health. Our reason to choose the Foleil workflow is access to those training, food and other app records with an explicit destination choice. We do not claim that Apple's export is insecure or that either format contains every possible health record.

The evidence and a practical example

Imagine preparing files before changing phones. First inspect the encrypted copy's status and whether the necessary key is available for the intended restore. Then, if you want a separate portable record, prepare an export and inspect what it includes. A progress photo choice and a reset undo archive can change the content you need to consider.

The evidence is the saved-copy status, the actual prepared files and the destination you choose. Export files contain private information and need protection at that destination. Disabling the backup removes the current on-device copy for subsequent backups, but an older backup can retain an earlier copy until replaced or deleted. The Health display accelerator is separate again and does not become part of this export.

Frequently asked questions

Are exported CSV files encrypted because backup is encrypted?

No. The encrypted backup and portable export are different workflows. Treat exported files as private information at the destination you choose.

Are progress photos always in the backup?

No. The backup includes them only when you enable that choice. Review the actual backup and export content separately.

Does turning backup off remove old backups?

No. An earlier iPhone or computer backup can retain its older copy until that backup is replaced or deleted.
